DR TAN HUI SUAN is the Founder and Medical Director of Dermstetiq; she speaks on the fundamentals of a solid skincare routine as well as recommended facial treatments as our skin matures.
How important is skincare and a skincare routine?
Our skin is the largest organ in the body. The facial skin, particularly, is exposed to various environmental stressors daily such as air-conditioned rooms (dry skin), UV exposure outdoors (free radical-causing pigments, wrinkles, premature ageing, loss of collagen), dust and pollution (causing dry, sensitive skin), and lifestyle choices (smoking and consuming alcohol). That’s why a daily skincare routine is important in preventing skin issues in the future.
It’s ideal to use a gentle cleanser to avoid irritation, a pH-balanced toner, and a serum that provides essential vitamins. On top of that, a moisturiser for hydration and sunblock for UVA/UVB protection are definite must-haves.
Do you need the best skincare products or is cleansing and a good moisturiser all you need?
Simple skincare with good clinical active ingredients trumps a complicated skincare routine that contains harsh ingredients, alcohol, chemicals or fragrances that have the potential to irritate or worsen pre-existing skin conditions. Look for quality products and clinically active ingredients that will benefit your skin in the long run.
What facial treatments should we be doing at 30, 40, 50 and 60 years of age?
At 30, we’d recommend the Red Carpet Glowing Skin Facial for those who desire flawless skin and a natural glow. It uses Hydrafacial Elite System’s patented vortex technology and hydra-dermabrasion for cleansing and exfoliation. When combined with Oxylight high-concentration oxygen therapy, the skin undergoes immediate cell renewal and rejuvenation, which boosts healthier and younger skin cells.
At 40, the Fotona Starwalker MAQX Laser System is the most advanced and highest performance Starwalker model that treats pigmentary skin disorder, acne scarring, active acne, vascular lesions, hair removal and skin whitening for all skin types.
Once you hit 50 and 60 years old, Xeomin purified botulinum toxin is great for treating dynamic wrinkles. You may also opt for Dermal Filler using Belotero if you wish to restore facial volume loss and undergo facial shaping.
What about a non-surgical facelift like Ultherapy – what are its benefits?
Ultherapy is the only FDA-approved micro-focused ultrasound for non-surgical face lifting and skin tightening. It’s a non-invasive lift procedure that delivers micro-focused ultrasound energy to the same foundational layer typically addressed by surgeons during cosmetic surgery without cutting or disrupting the surface of the skin.
It’s also the only non-invasive skin-lifting ultrasound treatment that has undergone rigorous assessments and clearance by the US FDA. Every treatment is personalised to the individual, following the “Plan, See and Treat” protocol, ensuring utmost attention to detail and professionalism. This imaging protocol is necessary to ensure proper contact with the skin and the appropriate depth of treatment.
Should men be using good skincare products and maintaining a regular skincare routine?
Definitely, yes! More men are beginning to be aware of skin health and men’s skin is exposed to the same environmental stressors and skin issues as women. Common skin conditions suffered by men include acne vulgaris, rosacea and sunspots, and all can be prevented or treated with a good skincare regime containing high-quality active ingredients.
